Exploring Idaho’s Natural Wonders: Eagle Tree in Wendell and more Bird Watching in Hagerman

Idaho, known for its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, offers nature enthusiasts a plethora of opportunities to connect with the great outdoors. In this blog post, we’ll delve into some exceptional locations that provide an immersive experience for bird watchers. First, the awe-inspiring Eagle Tree next to the West Point Cafe in Wendell and the bird-watching havens of Hagerman.

Eagle Tree at West Point Cafe

Along the country roads of Wendell, Idaho, the Eagle Tree stands, tucked between a local farmer’s land and the West Point Cafe. The Eagle Tree, aptly named for being a favored perch for bald eagles, offers visitors a front-row seat to witness these majestic birds in their natural habitat. And not just a couple, but sometimes over 100.

The journey to Eagle Tree is a simple one off of I-84. The country roads are well marked and speed limits stay at 50mph. Enter West Point Cafe into your GPS and let the countryside take you away. As you approach the site, keep your eyes peeled for the iconic white heads and impressive wingspans of bald eagles. There will be a number of adolescent Bald Eagles mixed in as well. The younger birds will not have their white head feathers quite yet. Even though they are somewhat smaller, they are still magnificent to witness.

What to Expect

The tree, with its towering branches, provides an ideal vantage point for these magnificent birds, allowing observers to witness their soaring flights and graceful landings. To enhance your experience, consider bringing a pair of binoculars and a camera to capture these awe-inspiring creatures. Remember to be respectful of the private land owner and not to park in their driveway or go over the fence. This will also keep the eagles and other wildlife from being disturbed.

The wintering eagles find refuge in the valley when climates are colder in northern parts of their habitat. Hagerman and Wendell are not only home to natural springs ideal for fish, but the sprawling farm land offer great hunting grounds. The eagles find fish in the rivers and small prey in the fields. After hunting during the day, they rest in trees and nest in the rocks during the evenings. The best time to view Eagle Tree is around sunset and early morning. One of our favorite things about Southern Idaho are the incredible sunsets, It’s not uncommon to see a sky of fire and a tree full of eagles.

Make sure to stop into the West Point Cafe. They are a great locally owned cafe and convenience store. They also grill a mean burger and their fries are delicious. It’s a perfect ending to a sunset photography session at Eagle Tree.

Nesting Eagles at Box Canyon

Another great spot to see the Eagles is in and around Box Canyon. The Thousand Springs State Parks closes the road to protect the birds, but visitors can walk from the roadside parking lot and see the eagles as they hike into the canyon. It is an incredible experience to see these birds soar through the air over the blue lagoon of Box Canyon. Our first experience was out of this world at Box Canyon. About 15 Eagles sat perched on a pivot in the neighboring farm. It was amazing to see them together and so close.
