Are you in search of an exciting and educational spring break destination for the whole family? Look no further than Hagerman, Idaho! Nestled in the heart of the Snake River Plain, Hagerman offers a perfect blend of outdoor exploration, learning opportunities, and family-friendly fun. Here’s why Hagerman should be your top pick for this year’s spring break getaway.

Discover Prehistoric Wonders

Start your adventure at the old Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument visitor center. Located right next to City Hall, the building now offers electric scooter and bike rentals. Stock up on snacks and refreshing drinks while you’re there too! Then hit the Hagerman Valley Pathways trail to the Thousand Springs State Park and Fossil Beds joint visitor center. The path runs along HWY 30 going north. It’s a short jaunt to the visitor center and from there the park has another 7 miles of trails to enjoy. But first, a stop that will take you and your family into the Pliocene Epoch and the very first horse.

Hagerman Fossil Beds Hagerman Horse

The Hagerman Fossil Beds will take you back in time to explore ancient landscapes and creatures. The Hagerman Horse is the official Idaho State fossil and new fossils are being uncovered all the time. As one of the National Park’s newest Visitor Centers, the facility is state of the art and filled with amazing history of the valley. Meet with knowledgeable rangers who are eager to share insights about the area’s rich paleontological past. Don’t miss the Junior Rangers program tailored for the little ones, offering interactive activities and exciting discoveries.

They will also have a plethora of information on other spots to see in Southern Idaho as well as the other sister parks in Idaho. If national parks are your fancy, there are two others within a two hour drive of Hagerman.

Explore Natural Beauty

Embark on a journey to the fossil bed bluffs overlooking the Snake River. This area is still an active dig site and scientists spend time in the field. It’s also a breathtaking view of the river. Keep an eye out for fossils embedded in the rock formations, providing glimpses into ancient ecosystems. On the way, you’ll pass the Owsley Bridge. It’s a local landmark and was once the main artery to the town. The bridge is now closed, but you can venture across on foot. There is also a boat ramp there and some grassy spots to enjoy the river.

1000 Springs Resort

1000 Springs Resort is a short drive from the Fossil Beds and bridge. Spring Break isn’t the same without bringing your swimming suits! The naturally heated springs around Hagerman offer an excellent way to enjoy the water all year round. 1000 Springs is a large indoor pool with tons of excitement for families. They have a water slide, rolling log, high dives, splash zone and basketball hoops. They do offer private soaking pools if the main pool gets too busy or you’re looking for a more relaxed soak.

When you’re done, enjoy the crisp evening air next to the river. 1000 Springs is also an RV Park and boat launch. They have a great play area for kids and picnicking areas. Bring hot dogs and s’mores for the perfect dinner. Enjoy the sun setting on Ritter Island and Lemmon Falls across the river.

Oster Lakes Fishing

Cast Your Line

For the fishing enthusiasts in the family, Hagerman is a dream destination. Pack your fishing gear and head to one of the many lakes that make up Oster Lakes. Managed by the state fish hatchery, these ponds are a hot spot for Rainbow Trout. There are designated spots all around the lakes as well as the streams. You’ll find picnic benches, fire pits and fishery information. We recommend trout bait, canned corn, dried marshmallows and small bits of worms. But if all else fails, the locals may be willing to give you a few tips!

If you’re itching for a bigger catch, the Snake River is some of the best fishing around. Cast your line into the slow moving waters. You’ll find sturgeon, trout, bass, and carp. A lot of the river fishermen and women bring boats to help them navigate to sweet spots, but bank fishing can be just as successful. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or trying your hand at fishing for the first time, Hagerman’s waters promise an unforgettable experience for all.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

Make your spring break even more memorable by joining in the festivities of the St. Patrick’s Day Fun Run & Marathon at Malad Gorge State Park. Plan to lace up your running shoes March 16 and participate in this lively event that brings the community together for a day of fun and fitness. Whether you’re cheering on the runners or crossing the finish line yourself, the St. Patrick’s Day celebration adds a festive touch to your Hagerman adventure. Be sure to head back into town after as the party tends to continue throughout the night.
