Two Nights in Hagerman – Here’s the Perfect Itinerary

There are lots of place to see and things to do while visiting Southern Idaho. When traveling to our little neck of the woods we recommend spending at least two nights to get the best of the valley. Whether you’re a see it all or sit back and relax traveler, Hagerman is full of hidden surprises. Here’s a perfect two-day itinerary to make the most of your time in Hagerman.

Day 1 Itinerary: Outdoor Adventure & Relaxation by the Snake River

Morning:

Start your day with a hearty breakfast at The Snake River Grill, a local favorite for an excellent breakfast before heading out on your adventure. They have all the traditional breakfast delights including; pancakes, omelets, biscuits & gravy, skillets & more. Definitely order bacon while you’re there, they serve Falls Brand an Idaho produced, thick cut, and very flavorful bacon!

  • Visit the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument & Thousand Springs State Park Visitor Center:
    Start your exploration of Hagerman by going to the well spring of information for visitors – the Visitor Center. Just a few years ago both parks joined together to create a beautiful new facility and place for visitors to learn all about the area. Of course, the Hagerman Fossil Beds are home to some of the most well-preserved fossils from the Pliocene Epoch. You can view some of the fossils they’ve discovered there as well as gather general historical information and state park insights.
  • Hiking or Nature Walk:
    After soaking in the area’s history, take a short hike along the Billingsley Creek Trail area. The creek is fed by crystal clear spring water. Wildlife and fish can be seen dotting the banks and at the creek’s bottom. On a hot day you’ll find kayakers, floaters and fishermen enjoying the area. You can rent tubes from Hydro Hustlers in town and enjoy a lazy day floating the creek too!

Lunch:

  • Lunch at The West End Cafe:
    The West End Café is most known for their winter time friends and their famous roust – Eagle Tree. In the winter Eagles come to nest and shelter in the area and at dusk and dawn viewers can sometimes see hundreds of Eagles right next to the café. They also host live music and are a great stop for the next part of your adventures. Their menu includes a variety of local favorites, from burgers and fries to steak and veggies. All served in a cozy setting with an outdoor patio and close proximity to Ritter Island, Box Canyon and Malad Gorge.

Afternoon:

  • Relax at Thousand Springs State Park:
    After lunch, choose between Box Canyon or Ritter Island State Park, two of Idaho’s beautiful hidden treasures. Or if you’re a quick hiker, plan for both! We recommend doing Box Canyon’s hike earlier in the day. There is limited shade and the canyon can really heat up in summer. You can take plan to take a dip in the water, but be warned it’s icy cold! Ritter Island is more leisurely, although there is a trail that follows the Snake River south behind Lemmon Falls. Otherwise, plan to get up close to waterfalls, stroll along the island’s shore and learn about one of Idaho’s first women entrepreneurs. There’s a beautiful barn, restored historical homes and plenty to learn.  It’s also a great place to bring a kayak or paddle board. Follow the springs north around the island and back around for an easy loop ride.
  • Gaze at the Devil’s Washbowl:
    For a unique and easy experience, visit Malad Gorge. The park is a great spot for seeing more waterfalls and getting a feel for how deep the canyons really are in the area. Walk out onto a metal walking bridge right over Malad’s waterfall and see if you can spot the devil’s face carved into the rock.

Dinner:

  • Dinner at Fire Pie Pizza & Wilson’s Club:
    Finish the day with a lively dinner at Fire Pie Pizza. Their patio and spirits will keep the night alive. The Wilson’s Club inside is just for 21+, but all ages are welcome to enjoy the patio and restaurant areas. They typically have live music every weekend and fun events throughout the summer. Evening:

  • S’mores & Snores
    After dinner, head back to your rooms Hagerman Valley Inn to official unwind and grab a seat by the fire. We have four fire pit areas and plenty of room for everyone. Bring your own S’more stuff or add the S’mores package to your room and get everything need right in your room!

Day 2 Itinerary: History, Relaxation, and More Outdoor Fun

Morning:

  • Breakfast at Bullets & Brew Coffee Shop:
    Start your second day with a warm breakfast burrito and a cup of locally brewed coffee. As an ammo and sporting good’s store too, the Bullets & Brew Coffee Shop is a charming and unique place to fuel up before heading out for another adventure.
  • Get a morning stroll in with a leisurely walk along the city pathway. The Hagerman Valley Pathway was a grassroots effort to connect the state park with the city. Enjoy stretching your legs and seeing a different part of Billingsley Creek State Park.

Mid-Morning:

  • Explore the Hagerman Valley Museum:
    Dive into the local history by visiting the Hagerman Valley Museum, located in the historic bank building off main street. The museum offers a glimpse into the town’s history, including exhibits on Native American artifacts, early settlers, and the town’s rich agricultural heritage.

Lunch:

  • Lunch at Los Portillo’s:
    Enjoy a casual, delicious lunch at Los Portillo’s, a tasty spot offering a variety of Mexican foods, from enchiladas and tacos to Molcajete & fajitas. The food is fresh and very flavorful. It’s a great place to enjoy a relaxed meal while chatting with locals.

Afternoon:

  • Whitewater Rafting on the Snake River:
    After lunch, get your blood pumping with a whitewater adventure with Idaho Guide Service. As one of Idaho’s longest standing whitewater companies, they know their way around rapids and making sure your party has a ton of fun! The Hagerman Reach is a great beginner stretch filled with fun bounces and splashes as well as places to jump in and swim. These exciting waters and stunning landscapes make for an unforgettable experience. They’ll handle the logistics, snacks and transportation!

Evening:

  • Dinner at The Riverboat Restaurant or Snake River Grill:
    If you want to change up your dining visits while in Hagerman, enjoy a great dinner at The Riverboat Restaurant. Right on main street, this restaurant and bar has homecooked American classics. We recommend their steak fingers, they are finger licking good! If you’re feeling weary and want a close by meal, the Snake River Grill cooks up a mean steak and delightful seafood. Just steps from your room, it’s a great place to end your two-day adventure with a relaxing meal.
  • Evening Soak:
    If the night is young and you’re looking for one more iconic Hagerman adventure. You’ll have to book a dip in one of our famous hot springs. Miracle Hot Springs and Thousand Springs Resort offer warm mineral waters to soothe any ache or pain. Be sure to plan ahead, private rooms are available as well as massages. You can definitely plan to relax!
