A Waterfowl Hunter’s Paradise
The Snake River and surrounding wetlands provide warm water for waterfowl, especially ducks and geese, to rest upon. The surrounding fields & brush also provide feeding grounds for migratory birds on their journey South. Add in the small town charm of Hagerman, friendly people & hot springs and you have the ingredients for an excellent hunting trip. The Hagerman Valley Inn has been welcoming hunters since 1988. The tradition continues today, even as the sport and places become more popular.
We won’t give away any places, but there are a number of outfitters that specialize in showing visitors around and getting the most out of their trips. If you get stuck, we can give you a few tips, but you’ll have to call the owner Jim. He’s been known to trade secret spots for a few mallards. One thing we want is for visiting hunters to please be aware of private property, wildlife management areas, state & national parks and any other posted regulations. OnX is a great app to help you navigate unfamiliar land ownership.
Seasons and Regulations:
U.S. Fish & Wildlife manages the seasons and permits through a flyway council. Migratory birds move from state to state and across the Canadian boarder, so these councils make most of the decisions as a cooperative. In Idaho, you’ll need a hunting license and a Migratory Bird Permit. There is an additional small fee for non-residents. Most convenience stores and sporting goods stores sell hunting licenses. You can also purchase them online or by phone.
The physical licensing places will also have booklets with rules for ammo, limits and season opening and closing. All of these details can be found online too, but the book makes it easy when service isn’t available. Goose & Duck (waterfowl) season typically opens around October and closes at the end of January. Please check the current rules & pricing.
Tips for Hagerman Duck Hunting
1. Get there early before the sun rises. Ducks can feed all night and fly back to water at first light. You’ll need to have decoys out and in your blind before they return. If you get to your blind and they are already back, it may be a while before any action can take place. Or you can test your luck at over the ground hunting. Foggy conditions are a plus & help hide your presence from landing birds.
2. Camouflage: You’ll want to go with a light brown, grass like camo to best fit in with the natural brush. Hunters set up natural blinds throughout the area. You may find them as you search for the perfect hiding spot. Many also hunt from a John Boat and use natural reeds & grass to cover themselves. There are boat launches at a few places; 1000 Springs Resort, Owsley Bridge & Bell Rapids. Be sure you are respectful of neighbors & land rules.
3. Water Retrieval: The Snake River rarely freezes completely, but it is still cold and deep. You’ll most likely want a boat or dog to help retrieve downed birds. Unless you’re a member of the Polar Bear Club. Waders will help with ponds and shallow areas. Some of the best hunting in the area can be found when the ponds freeze and the river is the only refuge for tired birds.
Fall & Winter Weather
Duck hunting in Hagerman presents its own set of challenges. Snow and cold weather help drive migratory birds from up north into the valley. The temperate weather, Snake River water and fields help attract a huge number of birds. Many places along the river do not have cell service and the weather can change quickly with wind.
Fog is typical in the mornings, but burns off by mid-morning. To be prepared – wear layers, know where you are and how to get back quickly, keep keys and other valuables in floating packs and check the weather before leaving each day. Even then, the wind can pick up in Southern Idaho and change everything quickly. In those cases, having extra layers will come in handy!
